"Mom! I have an idea. I was thinking we should do something fun together on the weekends...like, what about trying pottery lessons? It could be fun, right?"
"I always kind of...wanted to try something artistic. I don't know if I'll be good at it, but I can't really paint. And at least with pottery, you get to take something home with you, a mug or a bowl or something. We can't mess up too badly. And then we can try something else after that."
"Well, it's . . . it's about that girl I told you about. Liz? I want to, um. I want to take her out. Y'know, on a date. I just, um. I have no clue . . . whatsortofflowerstoget."
[ This feels easier to talk about over the phone, so... ]
"Hey, mom. Remember a few weeks ago you were joking about giving me the girlfriend talk? Well...I...I kind of have a crush on someone. It's not really gonna go anywhere, and I can't tell her, I just was wondering if you ever...liked someone from a distance?"
[Oh boy. Emma has to take a breath and remind herself to stay cool.]
"Yeah, sure, I had a crush or two when I was your age." [She doesn't add that it was on a teacher, that's irrelevant and very counter-productive.] "Is it, uh, is it someone I met? Maybe at the party?"
"Yeah, she was there. She's...older than me, so you don't really have to worry about anything. It's not like I can tell her I have a crush on her, so...it's not a big deal, I was just wondering. I mean...do you think it's okay to give her stuff sometimes? Like maybe flowers for Valentine's Day?"
"Hey, mom. Since it's gonna be Thanksgiving soon, I figured we'd all do something together for dinner, right? I...kind of invited some friends too, is that okay? I can totally help with stuff, I promise."
If I remember correctly the arrangement was Henry was to text one of us immediately if Neal arrived, and to the best of my knowledge that didn't happen.
That was exactly what he was supposed to do. He forgot. I get why and I'm trying to cut him some slack but between you and me, he just scared about six years off my life.
I haven't punished him. We can talk about if we should. He didn't have a good night. But yes, flashbacks to waking up from a coma kept me pacing until he was home.
"Hey, so uh. There's a guy here, shoved a gun in my face and told me I was lucky he didn't kill me. Before you ask, never seen him before, but he says he killed me."
"I'm at Slothburger just putting as much distance between me and this guy as I can. And yeah, I'm fine but figured you should know about the man with a gun threatening people. I'm just glad I didn't have Henry with me."
"Whatever magic's happening, I just watched it take Henry. From right in front of me Emma, it's like he...he floated in mid-air, then he was just gone."
